Grades: High school – 9-12th grades
Subject: renewable energy
Objective: The State Energy Conservation Office in Texas features renewable energy lesson plans. In this featured lesson, students will learn how energy is stored in plants. The students will conduct related experiments and connect those results and lessons to local Texas landfills to help determine how energy could be acquired and reused through the landfills.
Overview: Students will learn how to convert plant energy by burning a peanut and calculating the calories of heat produced. They will create and use a calorimeter to record the calories. Students will need to be able to differentiate between direct and indirect use of biomass. They can do additional research on landfills, bio-energy and renewable energy.
